Every child deserves to learn in an environment that is safe, supportive, and free from harm. Yet across the country, stories continue to emerge of educators or school employees accused of sexual misconduct—individuals who, in many cases, have already passed fingerprinting and traditional background checks.

At Verifent, we believe that ending this cycle begins with awareness, transparency, and collaboration. That’s why we recently hosted a powerful webinar titled “Sexual Abuse in Schools: Bringing the Silence to an End.”

A Conversation That Can’t Be Ignored

Moderated by Rebekah Campbell, Verifent’s Analyst and Liaison for Sexual Misconduct Reporting, and Rob Holloway, Verifent’s Chief Revenue Officer, this session brought together leaders and advocates united by one mission—to protect students and ensure accountability within our school systems.

As Rebekah shared during her opening remarks, the scale of this issue is staggering:

“In one year alone, the number of Americans affected by sexual misconduct in schools exceeds the combined tragedies of human trafficking, gun violence, plane crashes, car crashes, and both world wars—by twice as much.”

The discussion explored why existing background check systems are not enough and how districts can take meaningful steps to prevent offenders from quietly moving from one district to another.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fingerprinting Isn’t Enough: Traditional background checks often miss patterns of unprofessional or predatory behavior because many incidents never result in criminal charges.

  • Transparency Protects Students: Districts must have secure, standardized processes for reporting and verifying misconduct history before making hiring decisions.

  • Collaboration is Critical: Preventing sexual abuse in schools requires cooperation across states, districts, and agencies to close information gaps and ensure consistent safeguards.

How Verifent is Helping.

Through our DashHire product, Verifent enables districts to vet applicants for prior misconduct in a secure, compliant, and standardized way—providing a critical layer of protection beyond fingerprinting or background checks.

Our mission is simple but vital: to stop predators from moving undetected between schools and give every child the chance to learn without fear.
